How to reduce the presence of dust mites?

There are a few general rules on limiting dust mites.

One-off measures:

  • Let as much sunlight as possible into the room. Direct sunlight kills dust mites.
  • Remove carpets.
  • Remove materials that trap dust as much as possible. Paint the room instead of papering, and don't put any curtains.
  • Remove plants.
  • No domestic pets; certainly not in the bedroom.

Good hygiene:

  • Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth.
  • Air daily (at least 15 minutes).
  • Do not heat the bedroom.

Does that all seem a bit drastic? It is worth the effort, as it will greatly reduce the presence of dust mites. Unfortunately, it is not always enough to overcome the allergies. The bed continues to be an incubator. By sleeping in it every day, we create the ideal environment for these creatures. Our sweat provides the moisture, and our skin flakes provide the food.
