Frequently asked questions
About dust mite allergies
What is an allergy?
An allergy is caused by a defect in the immune system. Allergic reactions are triggered by the presence of certain substances in the environment. You are not born with an allergy. You develop it through over-sensitivity to these substances. Common allergies include dust mite allergy, hay fever, food allergies and reactions to the poison of stinging insects such as bees and wasps.
Mild allergies such as hay fever are very common. Although troublesome, they are relatively harmless. Some severe cases of combined allergic reactions (through environmental factors, food and/or medication) can be life threatening.
There are tests which can detect allergies. The substances to which a person is allergic can be determined using skin and blood tests. This makes treatment more effective.

How do I know whether I am allergic to dust mites?
If you are allergic to dust mites, you will probably display the same symptoms as in hay fever (allergic rhinitis). The symptoms of dust mite allergy may include:
- sneezing
- runny or blocked nose
- irritated, watering eyes
- eczema
- puffy, bluish skin under the eyes
- catarrh
- cough
A dust mite allergy may vary from mild to severe. In the mild form, you may have a runny nose, watering eyes and sneezing from time to time. In the severe form, the condition is chronic. The symptoms may include wheezing, sneezing fits or a blocked nose.

How can I avoid dust mites in the house?
You can't. But you can reduce their presence. That will also increase the impact of the treatment. To treat an allergy you must remove the causes as much as possible, as well as taking medication. In the case of dust mites, that means driving down the number of dust mites in the patient's environment as much as possible.
The ideal bedroom would be
- south-facing,
- aired daily (at least 15 min. per day)
- unheated, even in the winter
- equipped with a minimum of soft furnishings and dust-retaining materials
- very clean
- free of domestic animals
What more can you do?
- Keep the whole house clean.
- Wash sheets and pillow cases weekly. Dust mites are killed at 55°C
- Keep humidity below 50%. Air conditioning helps.
- Use a good quality air filter. Cheap air filters do not help. They can themselves be incubators for microbes.

How should I treat my dust mite allergy?
Prevention is the best way of avoiding an allergic reaction to dust mites. Expose yourself to dust mite as little as possible and use Paradust.
The bed purifier for a safe and natural treatment of the bed; the room sanitizer for intermittent treatment of the whole room.

How do dust mites get into my house? And into my bed?
Dust mites travel around easily. They can cling to any kind of material without difficulty. You can bring them into the house on coats, fleeces, feathers or anything on which they can hide. They make their way into the bedroom on socks, soft toys and pyjamas.

Why is it not enough to vacuum the mattress thoroughly to remove dust mites?
Dust mites shun the light. So they dig themselves in. In addition, they cling on with powerful hooks on their feet. Nevertheless, vacuuming is helpful: it removes much of the material on which the dust mite feed, and also their droppings.

Are there dust mite-free hotels?
It is best to ring the hotel before you travel. Ask if they have any low-allergy rooms. Also ask whether the beds are protected against dust mite contamination. For longer holidays, take Paradust bed purifier with you.

After a number of days the bacteria die off. That's why the treatment has to be repeated every three days to remain effective.
